Letter: Prosecution of teenager off base
Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 | 8:52 a.m.
I am outraged over the handling of the case involving the Nov. 10 car accident in Henderson that killed three teenage boys. The teenage driver was remanded into custody because he is a "threat to the community." Yeah, right. The 311 Boyz are more of a threat, and they are all free from custody.
Yes, the boy was driving the car that killed three teenagers, but aren't they also responsible for their own actions? They chose to get in the car with someone who had been drinking and we haven't heard what their blood alcohol levels were. Why isn't the person that provided the alcohol being prosecuted as well?
My heart and prayers go out to all families involved, but trying to use this teenage driver to set an example for the community is wrong.
Juveniles need to stop being prosecuted as adults. They are not capable of making adult decisions. That is why the juvenile system was created. Also, why are cameras allowed in his courtroom? For public entertainment I suppose. This whole process sickens me.
