Columnist Elizabeth Foyt: Schools get a holiday boost from ‘Breakfast’

The Women's American Organization for Educational Resources and Technological Training, Desert Suburban chapter, hosted a "Breakfast at Brighton" fundraiser Dec. 5 to benefit the organization's network of schools, programs and resources for Jewish students and teachers.

The event was held at the Brighton Collectibles store in The District at Green Valley Ranch. Chapter President Nancie Cohen and Brighton Collectibles manager Dawn Hilton were the co-hosts.

Special guest Phyllis Friedman, the organization's Western States Regional Director of Los Angeles and a former Green Valley resident, was warmly greeted by Sally Nyberg, Valerie Moonin, Eileen Baron, Debra Cohen and Bonni Baron.

Purchases of Brighton's leather goods, jewelry and home accessories contributed to the morning's proceeds, as did raffle drawings with Eva Stowers, Carole Pockey, Gloria Day Anzalone, Adrienne Miller and Krystal Flaton participating. Others enjoying the companionship provided at the breakfast included Joanne and Dorothea Freeland, Tami Schulman, Rita Molony, Edy Seaver, Jo Laurens, Ashley Wilson and Dana Sides. Brokaw speaks

Tom Brokaw, who stepped down recently as anchor of "NBC Nightly News," drew an enormous crowd when he appeared as guest speaker for the Nevada Development Authority's 48th annual luncheon Dec. 10.

More than 1,600 seats were sold for the gathering at Bellagio, with another 1,000 would-be guests unhappily turned away and unable to hear the beloved newsman and author ("The Greatest Generation") speak of his views on America.

The throng of attendees included Pat and Bob Campbell (The Campbell Companies) with daughter Robin Campbell and Kurt Ouchida (Vanguard Media), Sydney Knott and Jaymie Morris (CB Richard Ellis), Bob Coyle and Jennifer Simich (Republic Services), retired Gen. Billy McCoy (Boyd Gaming), Pat Kirkwood (Bank of Nevada), Roger and Theresa Blazic (Las Vegas Perspective/Blazic Design), Pat Curtis and Steve Yoken (Snell & Wilmer Law), Michael McDonald and Bob St. John (Bank of America).

Bob Coffin were just a sampling of those enjoying Brokaw's presentation.

Open house

A much-loved holiday tradition for hosts and guests alike, Dee and Ken Ladd's open house was held Dec. 5 at their Green Valley home on the Legacy Golf Course.

The Ladds are known for their highly decorated home and Christmas trees. Guests Dee and Don Snyder (Boyd Gaming), Judy Royer, Paul and Margaret Russitano, Barbara Lee and Bruce Woollen and Eileen and Eric Horn enjoyed viewing the collection of framed family photos adorning the couple's massive tree.

Dr. Brian and Suzanne Cram, Ann Lynch (Sunrise Hospital), David Rangel and Joyce and Steve Schneider all visited with Carol and Alan Stipe, who just returned from a lengthy cruise through the Panama Canal.

In the dining room, Brian Robinson (CEO-president of Sunrise Hospital) and wife Carol spoke of the year ahead with Dr. "Curly" J. Parker Kurlinski and wife Claire, joined by Jordie and Debbie Primack and Michael and Theresa Minden. A catered dinner served by At Your Service was enjoyed by Jay and Maureen Barrett (Marnell Corrao Associates), former Metro Undersheriff Richard McKee and wife Bobbie (Sprint), Peggie Smith and Bernie Goodemote (both of Hands Ink) and Carolyn Sparks.
