Letter: City needs more security funds
Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 | 9:03 a.m.
Jeff German's Dec. 7 column expresses concern about appropriate funding for Las Vegas from the U.S. Homeland Security Department. He's absolutely right.
The department is surely deficient in how it quantifies a city's need for proper funding. Like a good bureaucracy, it names common denominators and has no room for variables. We don't have a port and no nuclear reactor. But as German pointed out, we have some of the largest hotels in the world. We also have a density on New Year's Eve that rivals Times Square in numbers.
That our congressional delegation has had no more impact than last year is disgraceful. Sen. Harry Reid's argument for being re-elected is his seniority and all the clout he brings to help Nevada. So, Harry, where's the beef?
Intense security in this town can make the difference between not only lives but livelihoods. It's time for us all to do some yelling and screaming at Washington!
