Pedestrian is critically injured

A Las Vegas man was in critical condition at University Medical Center this morning after he was struck by a car as he crossed Flamingo Road just east of Lindell Road late Thursday night.

Erick Barnes, 32, was crossing Flamingo outside a marked crosswalk about 11:15 p.m. when he was struck by a 1996 Honda Civic driven by Daniel Patchin, 26, of Las Vegas, police said.

Patchin swerved to avoid Barnes but was unsuccessful, according to a Metro Police statement.

The preliminary investigation points to error on Barnes' part as the cause of the collision, police said.

Passenger dies after collision

A Las Vegas man died Thursday night after the car he was riding in was struck by another vehicle making an illegal left-turn, Metro Police said.

The man, whose name and age were not released, was traveling north on Spencer Street in a 1994 Nissan Sentra driven by 25-year-old Julio Salazar about 11:30 p.m. when the car was struck by a 1996 Ford Thunderbird turning left onto Tropicana Avenue, police said.

During the turn, the Thunderbird crossed into Salazar's path, striking the Nissan on the passenger side, police said.

The Thunderbird's driver, 25-year-old Robert Hollins of Las Vegas, suffered minor injuries. Salazar and his passenger were taken to University Medical Center, where Salazar was treated for moderate injuries.

The passenger in the Sentra died at the hospital.

Detectives are still looking into the accident -- the 134th traffic fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year -- but say a right-of-way violation on Hollins' part appears to be to blame.

Slain man found by wife in home

Metro Police are investigating a suspected homicide near Charleston and Decatur Boulevards.

Police responded to a call in the 5200 block of Del Rey Avenue about 5 p.m. Thursday and found a 39-year-old Lazaro Cabrera dead from a single gunshot wound.

Police said Cabrera was found by his wife when she returned home from work. Neighbors told police that they hadn't seen Cabrera leave the house Thursday.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Police seeking killing suspect

Metro Police believe a man wanted for a Nov. 11 killing is in the Las Vegas area.

Police are searching for William J. Kinsey, 21, and said he is considered armed and dangerous.

Police say that Kinsey and another man were in an argument in the northside of the valley along Lamont Street when Kinsey allegedly pulled a gun and shot Kevin Clark, 38, who later died at University Medical Center.

There is a reward for information leading to Kinsey's arrest. Call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Fire forces family from home

A Thursday afternoon fire forced nine people out of their home, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue said.

One bedroom was gutted and the rest of the home damaged by heat and smoke, fire officials said. Total damage was estimated at $45,000.

Firefighters had the fire in the 2100 block of Dune Drive, near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Washington Avenue, under control within minutes of arriving. There were no reported injuries.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire. The cause of the fire had not been determined this morning.

Candle blamed for house fire

A candle falling over in a bedroom caused a Thursday morning house fire and an estimated $40,000 in damage, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue said.

Firefighters followed a column of smoke to the home on Toadstool Lane near Bonanza Road and Lamb Boulevard about 11:40 a.m., fire officials said.

The fire was under control in minutes after gutting the bedroom. A woman at the home escaped unharmed.

The woman told firefighters that a candle burning in her bedroom fell over, setting the room on fire. Fire officials said she apparently used a small extinguisher on the fire, but it was too intense.

Tractor-trailer hits man in vacant lot

A tractor-trailer hit a man walking across a vacant lot near Sunset Road and Boulder Highway about 7 a.m. Wednesday and drove away, Henderson Police reported.

The man, whose name was not released was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries, according to police.

Police are looking for the driver and released surveillance photos that show the truck to be white and largely blank except for a one dark stripe along the trailer.

Anybody with information may call Henderson Police Department Traffic Unit at 267-5095 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Guardsman found dead is ID'd

A member of the Nevada Army National Guard found dead in a room at the Stead Training Center north of Reno Wednesday morning was identified Thursday as Spc. John A. Towns, 58 of Carson City.

The Washoe County coroner's office said the death was due to natural causes.

Towns, a cook with the rank equivalent to a corporal, was discovered dead in his room at the center. He was not on duty at the time and had been assigned to Company D, 113th Aviation.

Metro Police announced they will be conducting a DUI

checkpoint tonight in the northwest part of the valley. The month of December generally sees a higher number of people driving while intoxicated, police reported.
