Letter: Beauty is only skin deep

After reading the Aug. 13 article in your Accent section headlined, "Pieces (of A..)," I couldn't help but think of what we were taught as children, that it doesn't matter what you look like, it's what's inside that counts.

As these women prove (and some of TV's latest hit shows condone), however, looks are almost everything in this society. The fact that these women have the audacity to complain about it makes me ill. Few people want to hear how the "pretty" in society, who get away with just about everything, have it so tough.

These women obviously do not realize that if you dress provocatively, you will be noticed, and in some cases even stared at. We, as men, must assume that is why women dress the way they do -- to be noticed by the opposite sex.

Most people want to be noticed in some way. Look at all the award shows and fake reality programs. Speaking from experience, it is so much harder being ugly in society. There have been countless times where the ugly are ridiculed and disgraced in public just for being there.

Exception must be taken with the statement, "We attract scum." There are plenty of honest, loyal, and trustworthy men out there who just want to talk to or get to know a pretty woman. Because this man doesn't look like Brad Pitt, he's shown the door.

I hate to say it, but it appears that narcissism, pettiness, and shallowness have won the day.
