Citizen police classes on tap

Henderson Police are accepting applications for the upcoming Citizen Police Academy. The 13-week academy meets each Wednesday to educate citizens with a unique insight into the life and training of a Henderson Police officer.

Classes will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. each Wednesday starting Sept. 15 at the police department's main station, 223 Lead St. Candidates must be at least 21 years old and live or work in Henderson.

Applications are available at the main station and the Green Valley substation, 300 S. Green Valley Parkway. Interested parties can also call the Training Bureau at 267-4850.

Ice Cream Sunday set at Aliante

Aliante will hold its second annual Aliante Ice Cream Sunday and Pet Adoption event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at 2600 Nature Park Drive, North Las Vegas.

The event, also a back-to-school celebration, will feature ice cream, free kiddie ferris wheel rides, bounce houses, balloon artists, face painting, activity books and free packets of sunscreen.

Las Vegas Councilman Steve Wolfson

invites residents to attend a neighborhood meeting in Ward 2 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. The meeting will give residents of Ward 2 the opportunity to discuss ideas and concerns with their new council member in person. Call 229-6582.

Teacher chosen for NASA work

NASA has chosen Lee Anne Kimpton of the Alexander Dawson School in Summerlin to be one of two Nevada representatives in the Network Educator Astronaut Teachers program.

As a teacher astronaut, she will help coordinate Space Shuttle crew activity planning and operations, assist with science experiments, participate in International Space Station assembly and operations and perform other mission specialists' duties, according to NASA.

Kimpton is a master teacher and science curriculum coordinator at the Dawson School, where she has taught for five years. She was selected from 2,000 applicants.

Arts Collective receives grant

The Contemporary Arts Collective was awarded a Partners in Excellence Tier 1 grant for $5,136 from the Nevada Arts Council to support its 2004-2005 exhibition season.

The nonprofit organization recently elected new officers: President Jacie Maynard, Vice President Paco Alvarez, Second Vice President Diane Bush, Secretary Charles Weiner and Treasurer Dick Pollina. Gallery manager Natalia Ortiz was promoted to director.

The Contemporary Arts Collective gallery is located at 101 E. Charleston Blvd. and is open 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.the first Friday of every month. Call 382-3886 for more information.
