AT&T launches VoIP service

AT&T Corp. announced this morning that it has launched its Voice-over Internet Protocol telephone service in seven new states and 21 new markets, including Las Vegas.

The CallVantage service, which provides service over a high-speed Internet connection instead of a traditional phone line, allows customers unlimited local and long-distance calling for a flat fee of $34.99 a month. An initial introductory price of $19.99 per month for the first six months is currently available.

National news reports indicated that AT&T was expanding its service through partnerships with cable operators that offer high-speed Internet connections, including Cox Communications. AT&T declined to comment on the reports, and Cox representatives in Las Vegas could not be reached for comment.

Cox has indicated that it plans to offer its own VoIP service in Las Vegas but has not set a timeframe for a launch.
