National Guard seeks to move Henderson armory

The Nevada National Guard wants to move its Henderson armory and is asking the Clark County Commission to approve a lease for a piece of land owned by McCarran International Airport to clear the way.

The piece of land, near Serene Avenue and Valley View Boulevard, is under normal McCarran flight paths, and the commission agenda item asks Randy Walker, county aviation director, obtain an appraisal of the land and negotiate the terms of a lease agreement with the Nevada National Guard.

Lt. April Conway, a spokeswoman with the Nevada National Guard, said that plans for a new armory are in the very early stages.

"First we'd have to get the land, and then Congress would have to fund it," said Conway, who said it is too early to tell how much a new armory will cost or when construction could start if the lease is approved.

Currently the National Guard's Southern Nevada armory is located in Henderson at 151 E. Horizon Ridge Parkway. The armory was built in the 1970s.

The armory is home to the 1864th Transportation Co., the 777th Engineer Team Utilities Co. and the 72nd Military Police, among other units.

Despite its proximity to McCarran, if a new armory is built the base of operations for the Nevada Air Guard would remain in Reno, Conway said.
