Letter: Foreign-born people shouldn’t be president
Tuesday, April 13, 2004 | 8:49 a.m.
I don't know what Sen. Orin Hatch's reasoning is, but he has introduced a bill in Congress to amend the U.S. Constitution so that you no longer have to be a natural-born citizen to be president, and that's a very slippery slope.
The line between politicians and show business celebrities is becoming more blurred all the time. We were spared President Sonny Bono, but who besides me suspects that a lot of people voted for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger because they think he's cute.
Arnold Schwarzenegger might make a good governor. But before you get carried away and start trying to change the Constitution so you can run him for president, consider: If anyone could be elected president, Henry Kissinger would run, Madeleine Albright would run and Ozzy Osbourne would win on a write-in vote. Americans adore accents and Ozzie has suddenly become adorable. Now that his wife has reinvented him as warm and fuzzy, I want a hug. But president?
So think seriously, people, about how far you want Schwarzenegger to go.
