McIntire resigns from panel

Richard McIntire on Monday announced his resignation from the state Public Utilities Commission.

Appointed in 1999 by Gov. Kenny Guinn, his four-year term as commissioner was scheduled to expire in November. His resignation is effective immediately and he is expected to begin work as a utilities consultant with the Jones Vargas law firm in Reno this week.

The appointment of a new commissioner is expected to be announced today.

PUC Chairman Don Soderberg praised McIntire's efforts this morning.

"I appointed him staff director on my first day as chairman," Soderberg said. "A lot of the organizational improvements and efficiencies we instituted over the last four year he can take credit for."

On Wednesday, the commission begins hearings on a $22 million rate increase request from Southwest Gas. That hearing could bring about changes in the way rate adjustments are made, shifting from annual to monthly modifications.
