Poetry contest set for black history
U.S. Bank is calling for entries in its 11th annual African-American Reflections poetry contest in celebration of Black History Monday 2004.
The contest is open to all Clark County students in kindergarten through grade 12 and is intended as a resource to complement history, English and social studies curricula in local schools.
The theme of the contest, "Making a Difference," asks students to identify individuals whose lives, accomplishments or actions have made a difference in any aspect of our country. This includes, but is not limited to, political, social, economic or technological areas.
An online entry system has been developed exclusively for this contest by Teratis Systems Company, a leading web application developer. Students can submit their poems through the system at http://poetry.usbank.com. A panel of local judges will evaluate each poem and select 10 winners. Winners will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Their teachers will also receive a $100 award for use in their classrooms.
The call for entries has been distributed directly to local schools. Anyone interested in additional copies should contact U.S. Bank at (858)642-4639.
The Urban Chamber of Commerce
will hold its September luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Palace Station. Guest speaker will be Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev. Admission is $25. For more information, call 648-6222.
The U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association
and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas-USABDA Dancesport will host Ballroom Dance workshops at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday at UNLV's Moyer Student Union Ballroom, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. For more information, call 656-8690.
