Letter: GOP motivated only by profit
Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 | 9:20 a.m.
Once again the Republican administration displays its arrogant hypocrisy. That party trumpets at every opportunity the mantra of states' and local rights, and strict limitation of federal intervention in local affairs.
In a current U.S. Supreme Court case, however, the Department of Justice has filed a friend-of-the-court brief recommending that a California clean-air regulation for the Los Angeles metropolitan area be overturned.
It seems that some corporate entities object to the required purchase of less polluting vehicles by local governmental and public service agencies as current vehicles are replaced. This, in a city with one of the highest air pollution levels in the country.
It seems that the so-called ideals of the Republican leadership are always superseded by the interests of their rich corporate cronies.
