Three UNLV cadets excel in field training

Three UNLV cadets were among the Top Performers listed by Army ROTC leadership during the UNR/UNLV combined ROTC Fall Field Training Exercise, conducted at the Air Force Silver Flag Alpha Ground Combat Training Center, near Indian Springs, Friday and Saturday.

The outstanding cadets included Cristina Tissler, daughter of John Tissler of Edgewood, N.M., Ricky Jones, Valley High School class of 1999 and son of Gary and grandson of Betty and Burdett Jones of Las Vegas, and Stephen Settembre, son of Maria and Steven Settembre of Las Vegas and a 2001 Vo-Tech High School graduate, whose brother Michael also participated.

During the two days of the FTX, cadets from the University of Nevada, Reno, and UNLV formed integrated groups for M-16 rifle marksmanship, rappelling, obstacle course, military field problems and squad level combat tactics training using paintball guns.

The field problems included the rescue of a downed pilot, surmounting a barrier wall while carrying equipment and clearing a building of enemy personnel. Saturday afternoon freshman and sophomore cadets learned land navigation techniques in a desert environment, while junior and senior cadets took to the hills around Mount Charleston for land navigation training in more mountainous terrain.
