Schwikert headed to UCLA

SUN STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

Gymnastics world champion Tasha Schwikert was one of a number of area high school athletes to sign national letters of intent on Wednesday.

Schwikert, a senior at Centennial, will attend UCLA.

"I anticipate Tasha to be one of the greatest Bruins of all time," said UCLA women's gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos Field, who also announced that former junior national champion Lindsey Vanden Eykel of Plano, Texas, also will attend UCLA.

Meanwhile, several other local athletes made commitments.

Durango volleyball player Amy Schlauder signed with Brigham Young and teammate Kelsey Johnson with Boston College. They joined basketball player Tywain McTyer, whose commitment to Florida Atlantic was reported on Wednesday, as signees.

Bishop Gorman girls' basketball player Moneka Knight signed her letter to attend Texas Christian University and Lisa Curran, a two-time Class 2A softball player of the year from The Meadows School, signed with Villanova.

Also, the UNLV men's golf team received a signed national letter of intent from Jarred Texter, 17, of Millersville, Pa., the Rebels' head coach Dwaine Knight announced.

Texter, ranked seventh nationally by Golfweek among all junior boys, was a two-sport star at Penn Manor High School, lettering in both golf and track. He was an honorable mention AJGA All-American last year and expected to earn the honor again this year.
