Fund-raiser set for statue in D.C.

First lady Dema Guinn will co-host a luncheon Nov. 18 in Las Vegas to raise money to pay for the creation of a statue of Indian leader Sara Winnemucca to be placed in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall.

Each state has an allocation of two statues in the hall, but Nevada has only one, of late Sen. Pat McCarran. The Legislature decided a statue of Winnemucca would be the other one, so money is being raised to hire an artist. The artist will be selected next year.

The fund-raising lunch is at Mariposa restaurant in Neiman Marcus at the Fashion Show mall.

A Nevada-design necklace created for Guinn by her longtime friend Pamela Brown of Las Vegas will also be unveiled for the first lady to wear at state functions. The Guinns will be donating the jewelry to the Nevada state museum when Gov. Kenny Guinn leaves office.

Skate park will open Saturday

A $432,000 skate park will open at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St.

The opening, hosted by County Commissioner Myrna Williams, will include a competition by the Winchester Evolve Skate Board team and the Cambridge Center Skate Board team.

Music and refreshments will also be provided.
