Sports briefs for November 5, 2003
Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003 | 10:32 a.m.
Edgar Martinez, who turns 41 in January, agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, a deal that allows him to earn an additional $4 million based on plate appearances.
It's unclear if Martinez's 18th major league season will be the last for the designated hitter.
The two-time AL batting champion had a $4 million base salary this year and earned $3.5 million in performance bonuses. He faced a Sunday deadline to file for free agency.
Wolves' Garnett fined
Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves was fined $5,000 by the NBA for throwing a basketball into the stands during a game against the Utah Jazz. He was ejected in the second quarter of Monday night's loss at Utah after he was called for a second technical foul.
Gretzky back in Cup
Wayne Gretzky will return as executive director for Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey next September. Canada won its first Olympic gold in 50 years at Salt Lake City. Gretzky, the managing partner of the Phoenix Coyotes, was in charge of assembling the roster, lining up coaches and directing the management.
UCF QB suspended
Central Florida quarterback Ryan Schneider was suspended for the rest of the season by coach Mike Kruczek. Kruczek said Schneider violated team rules that he would not specify. Schneider ranks third among active NCAA quarterbacks with 82 career touchdown passes, trailing only N.C. State's Philip Rivers (86) and Louisiana Tech's Luke McCown (83). He completed 194 of 281 passes this season for 1,949 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Gadhafi's son accused
The son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi tested positive for a performance-enhancing steroid after a Serie A soccer match, the Italian Olympic Committee said today. Saadi Gadhafi, who recently signed with Perugia in the top Italian league, was found to have an amount of norandrosterone in his system that exceeded the allowable limit. Gadhafi has not yet played for Perugia in an official match, but players are randomly chosen for testing after every match.
