Committee OKs street cameras
A bill that would permit local governments to mount cameras at intersections to nab errant motorists has been approved by the Senate Transportation Committee.
Senate Bill 220, as amended, would permit local governments to issue civil fines for motorists who speed or run red lights.
But Sen. Terry Care, D-Las Vegas, said the videotape evidence could not be used to impose sanctions against the license of a driver.
The committee also recommended approval of Senate Bill 149, which would allow the state Department of Motor Vehicles to contract with private companies to place advertisements in the offices of the agency.
State Senate panel urges Estrada vote
A Senate committee split along partisan lines Thursday as it delved into President Bush's nomination of Miguel Estrada to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
The nomination has been stalled in the U.S. Senate through party line bickering. And the same thing happened in the Nevada Senate committee.
There were dueling resolutions before the Senate Committee on Legislative Affairs and Operations. By a 4-3 vote, Republicans pushed through Senate Joint Resolution 6 that urges the U.S. Senate to allow a floor vote on the Estrada nomination.
By an identical 4-3 vote, the committee killed a Democratic-sponsored resolution that asks the U.S. Senate to delay a vote until Estrada answers questions from Democratic senatorsn.
Guinn signs law covering e-mail
Gov. Kenny Guinn has signed into law a bill to put a tighter clamp on advertising by e-mail.
Assembly Bill 93 requires advertisements to have the abbreviation "ADV" or the word "advertisement" as the first word of the subject line of the e-mail.
