Carrier plans LV-Atlanta flights

Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran Airways, a low-fare carrier that has its prime center of operations in Atlanta, will begin service from there to Las Vegas on June 11 as part of a western expansion.

The airline, formerly known as ValuJet, will offer two Las Vegas round trips, one daily and one operating five days a week.

The initial Las Vegas service will be operated by AirTran's marketing partner, Ryan International Airlines, using a twin-engine Airbus A-320 jet with 12 business class seats and 150 in coach.

AirTran announced the service today as part of the company's expansion to the West, with plans to offer twice-daily service between Atlanta and Los Angeles beginning June 4 and Atlanta and Denver beginning May 21.

The carrier will compete with Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, which has seven nonstop flights between Atlanta and Las Vegas, and America West Airlines, which has one round trip a day between the cities.
