Henderson interchange contract awarded

CARSON CITY -- The state Transportation Department said today Washington Group International Inc. of Las Vegas submitted an apparent low bid of $91.6 million for building the Spaghetti Bowl interchange in Henderson.
This will be the second largest project in the department's history trailing only the $91.8 million for the Spaghetti Bowl near downtown Las Vegas in 1997.
Department spokesman Scott Magruder said there were six bids ranging up to $104 million and they are under review. A decision on a contract award is expected in a few weeks, he said.
The department's estimate of the project was $86.2 million but Magruder said the low bid falls within the 7 percent variance allowed which is $92.2 million.
The job calls for six lanes of freeway from Interstate 515 to Stephanie Street, the interchange at I-515 and Gibson Road and an overpass at the railroad tracks.
Construction should start this fall and the project should be completed in two and a half years, officials said.
The state Transportation Board, headed by Gov. Kenny Guinn, added the Henderson Interchange project to the "super five" projects and advanced its construction schedule.
