July 4th celebration
The City of North Las Vegas will hold its fourth annual "Independence Day Jubilee" celebration at 6 p.m. Thursday at James Seastrand Park, 6330 Camino Eldorado. The fireworks show is at 9 p.m. Admission is free. 633-1612.
Barn dance
The Southern Nevada Old-Time Contra Dancers co-sponsor an old-time barn dance, featuring callers and live fiddling music, square dancing and more, at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for members, $3 for students and active military and free for children under 15. 229-6383.
Book reading
Award-winning author Carolina Garcia-Aguilera will read from her new book, "Luck of the Draw," at 7 p.m. Monday at the Clark County Library Theater, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. The event is free. 734-7323.
Free movie
Crown Theatres presents its annual free Summer Children's Film Festival at 10 a.m. Thursday at 450 E. Freemont St. This week's film is "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron." 383-9600.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District offers the following book discussion groups at area libraries this week:
Spring Valley Book Discussion Club -- 7 p.m. Thursday, Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd. 507-3830.

Drama workshop
A free community drama workshop will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesdays in the main showroom of the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, 4000 W. Flamingo Road. 457-0234.
Writing contest
Scripts are being accepted for the 16th Annual Nevada Film Office Screenplay Competition until Monday. Prizes include cash awards, a press conference / luncheon with the lieutenant governor of the state, gifts and promotion of the top three winning scripts to producers and production companies in Hollywood. Sculpture contest
Entries are being accepted for a sculpture contest held by the Pulidor Foundation/Spirit of the Nations, in preparation for its second annual Native American Arts & International Film Festival from Nov. 14-16.
