CARSON CITY -- Gov. Kenny Guinn signed 31 bills Wednesday, including one that requires newcomers to the state to obtain Nevada license plates more quickly.
Guinn has now signed 502 bills this Legislature.
Assembly Bill 30 requires the state Department of Motor Vehicles to inform people who turn in an out-of-state driver's license and get a Nevada license that they must register their car within 30 days. If the department determines the vehicle is not registered, the names of the people can be turned over to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
It becomes effective in July 2004.
Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas, suggested the state may realize $10 million in additional revenue from the law.
AB30 also prohibits the state from making refunds on unused vehicle registrations when people give up their license plate. Assemblywoman Kathy McClain, D-Las Vegas, estimated this could save the state $4 million. This portion of the law becomes effective immediately.
