Lake Mead fire restrictions posted

Lake Mead National Recreation Area has posted campfire and smoking restrictions because of extreme fire danger, National Park Service Superintendent William Dickinson said.

The restrictions are effective immediately. No campfires are allowed outside of a developed recreation site. Portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are allowed.

There is no smoking except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or a designated smoking area. Smoking is allowed on the water.

Fireworks, including those marked as "safe and sane," are not allowed at any time within the recreation area.

Violations of the fire restrictions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000. Besides the fine, a jail term of up to six months can be imposed, with or without the fine.
