Fry selected to head search committee

UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter said she has selected Dr. Joseph "Andy" Fry to chair a screening committee that will help with the search for the school's new athletic director.
"He's a professor of history and he himself was a college basketball player,' Harter said. "He has been very involved in the past on the intercollegiate athletic committee. He has exactly the right kind of combination of experience to chair the committee."
Fry will oversee the panel which will also include members of student government, alumni and athletic department personnel. Harter said she hoped to have the committee selected in the next two weeks.
Fry joined the UNLV faculty in 1975 and teaches courses in U.S. foreign relations, the history of the South after 1850, U.S. involvement in Vietnam and the U.S. history survey. He has also published three books and was recently named a distinguished professor at the school, the higest honor awarded to a faculty member.
"Being named a distinguished professor is a very prestigious honor," Harter said. "It's a very small group of the faculty who are at the highest level of the institution."
Fry received his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Virginia in 1970 and 1974 and received his bachelor's degree in 1969 from Davis and Elkins College.
