VegasBeat — Timothy McDarrah: P. Diddy is the ‘black Sinatra’

Who are these people?

A group of young entertainers has taken to calling themselves the New Rat Pack.

Some friends of rap mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs (the former Puff Daddy) now call him Frank, after the leader of the real Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra.

Others in the new, faux "pack" include the reigning King of Young Hollywood, Ashton Kutcher (Demi Moore's boy toy), and two other actors from "That '70s Show," Danny Masterson and Wilmer Valderrama (as Sammy Davis, Dean Martin and Joey Bishop?)

At one of the glut of recent VEGAS Magazine parties, we asked Valderrama how the trend got started.

"Diddy started referring to himself as 'the black Sinatra' and the rest of us just sort of picked up on it," he told VegasBeat. "I mean, what better role models for cool are there than those guys?"

In other Frank Sinatra news, Ol' Blue Eyes will be the headliner in the fall at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, in, "Sinatra: His Voice. His World. His Way."

In the show, written by Colman de Kay and directed by Des McAnuff (he directed "Tommy" on Broadway), a live orchestra will appear with a rotoscoped Sinatra -- mechanically removed from old film.

Sinatra joins the virtual Elvis, who toured the world a few years ago via large-screen projection.

At a party at Radio City last month to announce the project, Sinatra's daughter Tina said she hoped to bring the show to Las Vegas, China and Russia.

Marty Hennessey, the tennis pro at The Stirling Club, is having a Wimbledon viewing party at the Paradise Road club today.

His fingers are crossed that fellow Las Vegas pro, Bally's David Pate, and his partner, Scott Davis, are still playing.

The duo won their Wednesday match in the over-35 division against Heinz Guenthardt and Balazs Taroczy, 6-2, 6-0. Their Friday opponent had not been determined by deadline.

The Cast Inc. is having its monthly lunch on Monday at Greek Isles.

The lunch honors Cliff and Claude Trenier, billed as the longest-running act on the Vegas lounge circuit.

The year-old nonprofit organization, which raises money for needy entertainers and related causes, is made up mostly of such veteran performers as Keely Smith, Tony Curtis, Robert Goulet, Pat Cooper and Sonny King; the lunch is open to the public. Tickets are $25 and all proceeds go to The Cast Inc. For more information, go to thecastinc.com.

Entertainer Stephen Sorrentino is back home in Las Vegas after a successful East Coast tour.

From Friday to July 13 he opens for Dennis Miller at Paris Las Vegas. In August Sorrentino is expected to open a new version (at a different property) of his "Voices in My Head" one-man show that played to packed houses at the Riviera last fall.

Carol Brady, aka Florence Henderson, had lunch the other day at Spago inside the Forum Shops.

Coming to Macy's at the Fashion Show mall and elsewhere in the fall: limited edition LeSportsac bags designed by No Doubt's Gwen Stefani.

Coming to Macy's in Fall 2004, a complete Stefani-designed, ready-to-wear collection.

Now at the Macy's at Fashion Show, Boulevard mall and Meadows mall: clothes from Shady Limited, named for Slim Shady, yet another nom du plume of rapper Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers.

In-store appearances by Stefani and Eminem are being planned for Vegas in September.

Vegas resident and leading infomercial producer Ben Kalb just got back from a conference in Marbella, Spain.

He tells us how he passed what appeared to be a small restaurant with the name "Las Vegas" on the awning. He was hungry, his day was over, and he and some colleagues wandered in.

But he found no tables, or chairs -- just four women on bar stools.

"They were motioning us in to take advantage of their services in the back room," Kalb said. "We declined and left. But it was interesting to note how the name 'Las Vegas' plays in some places -- completely synonomous with sex."

Shocking!
