Letter: Change law so majority rules
Tuesday, July 1, 2003 | 9:07 a.m.
Just like the Electoral College, the two-thirds majority required to raise taxes in Nevada has outlived its usefulness.
Last Friday's 27 to 15 vote to raise taxes in the Assembly was a clear majority -- 64 percent -- "the will of the people."
Why keep the two-thirds requirement? Why must Nevada go through this situation, being controlled by big business?
Remember this at the next election. All the Democrats and four Republicans (Josh Griffin of Henderson, Joe Hardy of Boulder City and Dawn Gibbons and Jason Geddes of Reno) voted to move into the future when they voted last Friday in favor of increased taxes.
When our time comes, we must vote the rascals out who didn't vote to increase taxes.
Let's get our voting structure changed so that majority rules. Not only for the children, but also for all of us. It's that simple.
