Falling interest rate jams recorder’s office

The last day of the month typically brings large numbers of Clark County residents into the County Recorder's Office to file deeds for their newly bought, refinanced or homesteaded homes.

But on Monday the office was deluged as never before as homeowners sought to capitalize on a 45-year low in interest rates.

"Today is a very exciting day for the County Recorder's office because we achieved an all-time high on recording documents," County Recorder Frances Deane said. "I'm so proud of my staff."

Hourlong lines kept the waiting room full throughout the day, but Deane said she worked to relieve the tedium by cracking jokes and bringing people water and cookies as they waited.

"We have big fun," she said.

With 30-year fixed rates hovering at just 5.5 percent, Deane said residents who had been considering buying or refinancing homes jumped at the opportunity.

The County Recorder's Office's previous high of just over 6,200 land records was set on the last day of May, according to Dean. About 4,000 records are filed on an average day.
