Columnist Barb Henderson: State duck stamp art contest takes flight

Barb Henderson is an outdoors enthusiast, freelance writer and producer/host of outdoors radio television programming. Her column appears Friday in the Sun.

The Nevada State Duck stamp is so beautiful that many folks choose to keep them in a collection. But for waterfowl hunters in Nevada, the attractive stamp is required on their licenses.

The art contest for this year's duck stamp is under way and the winning painting will grace the 2003-04 state stamp.

The Nevada Waterfowl Association, sponsors of the 2003 contest, have chosen the green-winged teal as the subject for this year's competition.

Which means all entries must feature the green-winged teal, a wintering species most commonly found in Nevada during the peak of their migration.

The contest, sanctioned by the Nevada Division of Wildlife, is open to all artists regardless of residence. Entries will be accepted through March 21, with judging taking place in early April.

At that time, a panel of seven judges will have the difficult task of determining the winner of this prestigious honor.

The new $5 duck stamp, with the winning painting, will be issued in September and will be available at NDOW offices.

The Nevada State Duck Stamp's annual art contest is definitely all it's quacked up to be.

Contest rules and required entry forms were mailed to art supply stores and artists throughout the country, and are available by contacting the Nevada Division of Wildlife's headquarters at 1100 Valley Road, Reno, Nevada, 89512.
