CARSON CITY -- Smallpox vaccinations could be available by the middle of next month for public health officials who volunteer for the shots, state officials said.
Jim Najima, public health preparedness coordinator for the state Health Division, said Thursday that people who have shown an interest in being inoculated should receive information on the procedures by the end of the month.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported Thursday that 1,043 people have been vaccinated so far in 18 states.
Because of the potential adverse effects of the smallpox vaccine, people must undergo an extensive education process before getting the shot.
No estimate was immediately available on how many Nevadans might volunteer for the shots. The state is working with the Clark and Washoe county health districts to administer the program.
Martha Framsted, public information officer for the state Health Division, said a logistical plan must be developed for giving the inoculations. Once a vial of vaccine is received, it must be used up in 60 days, she said.
