New lawsuit fees proposed

CARSON CITY -- The Senate Judiciary Committee introduced a bill that would add $20 to the cost of filing or answering a civil lawsuit in District Court.

Senate Bill 106 would send $5 of that amount to the county for use by District Courts for technological improvements. The other $15 would be distributed to the state Office of Court Administrators, also for technology uses.

The money would be used to convert and store records, buy hardware and software and train employees.

A second bill would impose a $15 administrative fee on all people judged guilty of a misdemeanor in Justice or Municipal courts.

Senate Bill 108 would distribute that money to District Courts with specialty programs that handle people suffering from mental illness or alcohol or drug abuse.
