Budget bill earmarks $300 mil. for Nevada

WASHINGTON -- Congress on Thursday stamped its final approval on the $400 billion federal budget bill that allocates money to most federal departments and projects in the fiscal year that began Oct. 1.

President Bush is expected to sign the bill.

In the fine print of the 32-pound, 3,000-page bill is about $300 million for more than 100 Nevada projects. And that's not counting the money for the Department of Energy's proposed nuclear waste repository project at Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The Energy Department will receive $460 million for Yucca licensing and transportation projects, about $85 million more than last year. The final figure is a compromise -- it's $130 million less than President Bush wanted but $124 million more than Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., had negotiated for in previous bargaining.
