Letter: GOP seeking to kill Medicare
Friday, Dec. 26, 2003 | 9:10 a.m.
That is not all, as I understand the same thing is planned for Social Security if President Bush is re-elected. It will have a rigid income and assets "means test" that will reduce Social Security to a mere welfare program for the very poor (most of whom are already on welfare). It will free up most of the benefits being paid now to give to Wall Street in the form of individual retirement accounts for future retirees, leaving most current, non-rich retirees to scramble for places near sewer vents to sleep and garbage bins to eat after all their savings are exhausted.
Don't scoff, because all the needed ingredients are there -- Republican control of the White House and Congress and an ill-informed or misinformed electorate. The undying goal of the GOP has always been the unraveling of the New Deal and Great Society, and they are not going to miss their best chance to reach their goal. I say, vote them out.
