Regulators endorse new Nevada tax rule

Scores of inquiries have been presented at hearings and workshops held since the entertainment tax and other levies in a record $833 million tax package were approved -- and officials said the rules won't always provide a clear answer.

"We can't cover every factual situation with a regulation," Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander said, adding that both the board and the state Tax Commission will try to help clear up confusion by providing advisory opinions on request.

The entertainment tax, expected to bring in more than $110 million over two years, goes beyond an old tax collected only on entertainment offered in casinos.

Now it applies to facilities with more than 300 seats, and will be collected on admission charges, drinks, food and merchandise sold in strip clubs, bars and many nightclubs.

Responding to earlier questions, officials have said the levy exempts casino dolphin exhibits, karaoke bars, strolling musicians, hula dancers and nightclubs with dance floors.
