July passenger count increases

McCarran International Airport had one of its best months ever in July, when 3.2 million passengers flew in and out of Las Vegas.

McCarran spokeswoman Hilarie Grey said today that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has detected a post-Iraq war resurgence in vacations and visitation for the month. This was enhanced with Independence Day falling as a three-day weekend this year.

July was the fifth busiest month ever at McCarran, about 300,000 passengers off the record of 3.5 million people set in March 2001. July's figures were up 6.4 percent from a year ago and fractionally ahead of July 2001.

Big increases in passenger counts were reported by No. 1 McCarran carrier Southwest Airlines, 1 million people (up 13.4 percent from July 2002); No. 2 America West Airlines, 584,869 (up 16.7 percent); and American Airlines, 202,614 (up 12.8 percent).
