Kicker must choose football or military

Hubi Schulze Zumkley had a decision to make. Should he:

a) Go to Afganistan on a military mission and make a nice sum of money, or

b) Return to the United States and rejoin the UNLV football team as a kicker.

A 6-foot-2, 220-pound sophomore from Germany, Zumkley handled kickoffs for the Rebels for much of the 2001 season. He chose to rejoin the UNLV team and is back practicing again with John Robinson's squad.

"In Germany, it's mandatory that every male spend either 10 months in the military or doing civil service," Zumkley explained.

So Zumkley left school in June 2002 for his required 10-month military stint. He had the option of going to the Middle East but passed.

"Some of my friends went to Afganistan," he said. "They asked me if I wanted to, but I said no. You can earn some good money if you go over there. You can get around $60,000 for spending six months on duty there."

Zumkley is hopeful that he can regain his role as a kickoff specialist for the Rebels again this fall.
