Students, officials to discuss government

Government leaders will participate in Government Day panel discussions Friday with student interns in the Clark CountySummer Business Institute.

The goal of the two panel discussions at the County Governement Center -- 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on business and industry and 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on social issues -- is to help students understand how local government functions, as well as allow the students the opportunity to ask government leaders about important issues facing youth.

About 100 students in the eight-week SBI program will participate in the discussions, moderated by County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates.

Other government officials on the panels are: Ken LoBene, Department of Housing and Urban Development; Las Vegas Councilman Lawrence Weekly; Assemblyman Morse Arberry; Sheriff Bill Young; state Sen. Dina Titus; Las Vegas Councilwoman Lynette Boggs-McDonald; Fran Courtney, Clark County Health District; state Sen. Joe Neal; Henderson Police Chief Michael Mayberry; Sen. Harry Reid; Clark County School Board member Sheila Moulton; state Sen. Valerie Weiner; state Sen. Dennis Nolan and Doug Bell, Clark County Community Resources.

A free child safety program

will be offered to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Toyota, 6551 Centennial Center Blvd., to promote awareness in an effort to protect children against violence. For more information, call 942-3800.

National Marina Day

will be celebrated from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday at Callville Bay at Lake Mead. The event will feature an open house, children's art contest, fishing demonstrations, booths, educational displays and boat safety inspections. Call 565-8958.
