Man found dead in apartment

A maintenance worker found a man dead about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in an apartment in the 700 block of Carson Avenue in downtown Las Vegas, an apparent victim of a homicide, Metro Police said.

Evidence suggests the man may have been stabbed to death, Lt. Tom Monahan said. The Clark County coroner's office did not release the name of the victim this morning.

Stabbed man dies after seeking help

A man was stabbed to death about 10 p.m. Tuesday in an apartment complex at 4040 Boulder Highway, Sgt. Ken Hefner said this morning.

The man, who lived in the complex, staggered out of his apartment and went downstairs asking for help. A resident called 911.

When paramedics arrived, they found the man dead outside.

Hefner said it's not clear why the man was stabbed. Detectives don't have any suspects.

Upstairs shooting misses neighbors

A man was shot and killed in a second-floor apartment near Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police think the killing may be drug-related, Metro Police homicide Lt. Tom Monahan said today.

Residents of the apartment below the victim's told police a bullet came through their ceiling while they were eating dinner. The bullet landed on the table, Monahan said.

When police got to the apartment building, located in the 5300 block of Del Gado Avenue, they found the man upstairs dead.

Witnesses reported seeing two men in their 20s driving away from the scene in a green newer model, four-door Honda Civic or Accord. A California license plate was on the car reading 3KE, followed by an unknown number. The last numbers in the plate are 876.

The Clark County coroner's office did not release the victim's identity this morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or the homicide section at 229-3521.

Ex-ethics worker's lawsuit dismissed

A lawsuit filed by the former top employee of the state Ethics Commission claiming that she was improperly fired, was dismissed Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson.

The former employee, Lee-Ann Keever, was ordered to pay $461 in legal costs and fees.

Keever said she was fired because she blew the whistle on alleged improper acts by commissioners. Dawson said Keever "acted willfully and in bad faith" in processing her suit.

The judge said Keever failed to follow court orders involving discovery and appearing at deposition.

Voter registration deadline nears

Those who want to vote in the June 3 general election must register by Saturday.

The city of Las Vegas has extended the hours for voter registration at the first-floor information desk at City Hall, 400 E. Stewart Ave. Today through Saturday the hours of registration are extended to 9 p.m. Normal hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On the Las Vegas municipal ballot will be a Ward 1 City Council race, Municipal Court Departments 1 and 6 and a $50.6 million Las Vegas-Clark County Library District bond issue question.

Woman angry over false alarm

Elko County sheriff's deputies say they'll repair the door they kicked in at an elderly woman's house over the weekend and this time they plan to give her some advance notice.

Deputies busted into the woman's Elko home Sunday after neighbors called the sheriff's office to report she had not been seen for a few days.

"An officer went out, looked in the windows and knocked on the door, but he didn't receive an answer," Elko County Sheriff Neil Harris said.

Because neighbors feared for her safety, Harris said the deputy called for backup, kicked in her door and was met by the screaming woman.

"She was alive and well," Harris said told the Elko Daily Free Press.

"Her response to the deputy was, 'I don't have to answer the door if I don't want to, and I don't have to answer the telephone if I don't want to.' "

The woman's name has not been released. It took the deputy about five minutes to calm her down, Harris said.

Couple guilty in Medicaid fraud

A Las Vegas psychologist and his wife were judged guilty Tuesday of misdemeanor theft charges in bilking Medicaid out of about $100,000.

Justice of the Peace Douglas Smith ordered John Freitas, 46, and his wife, Tammy Neil, 34, to perform 40 hours of community service and to complete a professional ethics class. He also ordered the two to pay $157,500 in penalties, from which Medicaid will recover its money.

Tim Terry, director of the Medicaid Fraud Unit in the state attorney general's office, said Tammy Neil, who is now the wife of Freitas, posed as a psychologist and gave therapy to those enrolled in Medicaid.

Terry said Neil did not have proper credentials to offer this service.

Freitas and Neil pleaded no contest to the charges.
