County adopts new rules for hazardous waste

The Clark County Commission on Wednesday adopted new rules governing the handling, storage and use of hazardous materials.

The ordinance came from an investigation and discussion of the AeroTech rocket factory explosion and fire at the plant in eastern Las Vegas that killed one, injured two others and destroyed nearby businesses.

The law, passed 6-0, brings the county's codes in line with state and local regulations for businesses that store, manufacture or use hazardous materials, including potentially explosive chemicals.

The law also requires anyone using such materials to file a disclosure to that effect with the county and to meet with county staff before using the materials.

The law applies to businesses that use dangerous chemicals, operate with medical gases or have tanks of flammable gas or liquids. Any of those uses would require a special county permit, according to the ordinance.
