Letter: Heading off another Hitler
Friday, April 4, 2003 | 6:02 a.m.
Tragically war is and always has been the only solution when diplomacy fails, and the United Nations failed the people of Iraq and the world. Just like after World War I, the people of the world wanted peace. And the world leaders formed the League of Nations and they thought that was going to end all of the world's problems.
So we sat on our behinds and watched Hitler first take over Germany, then march into the Rheinland, Austria, Hungry and Czechoslovakia. The whole time all Hitler said he wanted was peace. So we and the rest of the world just sat on our hands and did nothing. You can see what that got us.
Now we had another madman building up an army and supplying it with the means to destroy his neighbors and in time have the ability to fire missiles to any place on this earth. If Saddam Hussein would gas his own citizens who dared to disagree with him, what person in their right mind would not believe he wouldn't do the same to anyone who stood in his way?
