Letter: Citizens need to be more active by voting
Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002 | 9:36 a.m.
Only half of eligible voters register and only half of them vote. During wartime this is dangerous to our republic and democracy!
In a republic, we have representatives in Congress -- senators and congressman -- who hold our fate in their hands. Yet they are being elected by a vast minority of the population.
The odds are that these voters are not politically involved and informed. Why? Because name recognition, and not the quality of being informed, is the main reason people vote for a candidate. This is shallow!
Politicians have job security for two, four or six years, and if they are unsupervised, by the electorate, they may be incompetent or crooked and have free rein to harm America.
Political activism is good citizenship!
