New bus route geared for seniors in northwest

Seniors and others in the northwest Las Vegas Valley have a new transportation alternative.

The Regional Transportation Commission launched a new route targeting seniors in the Sun City Summerlin and Desert Shores areas Thursday. Route 713 operates Tuesdays and Thursdays and stops at three community centers, the Rainbow Library, Target, Mountain View Medical Center, Vons, Smith's and Walgreen's.

The RTC's Citizens Area Transit bus on the new route is smaller than the buses that run the everyday routes. The RTC keeps the fare at 50 cents, less than half the fare for traditional routes. The agency said the route is less expensive because the smaller bus, limited operating time and shorter route length keeps costs low.

The smaller bus size also allows drivers to pull up next to stores.

Route 713 joins three other "Silver Star" routes: the 714 in Charleston Heights, the 715 on Boulder Highway and the 716 in Henderson.

For more information about the Silver Star service or other bus services, call 228-RIDE or the RTC at 676-1500.
