Ex-councilman Hawkins to be honored for service

Former Las Vegas City Councilman Frank Hawkins will be honored tonight during the annual "Frederick Douglass Educational Fund" gala.
The event to honor Hawkins' contributions to the community as both a civic leader and developer will begin at 6 p.m. at the Venetian Hotel.
A former college and pro football star, Hawkins currently is a developer of affordable housing for low- to moderate-income people. A native Las Vegan, he was the first black elected to the Las Vegas City Council.
A star running back for the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, Hawkins was inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame in 1997. Hawkins, who also starred at UNR, was selected as a member of the University of Nevada Team of the Century in 1998 and was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Hawkins is spearheading the economic development growth in the area where he grew up.
He is the ninth honoree of the Frederick Douglass award, named for the 19th century free black man who led the movement to abolish slavery in the nation.
Harry Alford, president and CEO of the National Black Chambers of Commerce, will be the keynote speaker. Alford address the state of black business in today's marketplace.
