Editorial: Our endorsements in Assembly races

In Thursday's Sun, we endorsed Assembly candidates in Districts 1 through 20. Today we offer our recommendations in the remaining contested seats in Southern Nevada: Districts 21, 22, 28, 29, 34, 37, 41 and 42. Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, a Democrat, didn't draw an opponent in District 23 so he automatically will be re-elected.

As a schoolteacher, Lisa Cano's work ethic has served her students well. The Democratic candidate for District 21 would bring that same drive to Carson City, where she would stand up for education, health care, transportation and other services. Her opponent, Republican Walter Andonov, has excellent credentials, but we find Cano's views more closely paralleling the needs of Southern Nevadans. The Sun endorses Lisa Cano. The District 22 incumbent, Republican David Brown, distinguished himself in the 2001 Legislature as conscientious and a quick learner who made valuable contributions in his freshman term. His opponent, Democrat Caren Levenson, is bright and knowledgeable, but Brown's experience gives him the edge. The Sun endorses David Brown.

Assemblywoman Vonne Chowning, a Democrat and chairwoman of the Transportation Committee, has been one of our steadiest and hardest-working legislators in her six terms representing District 28. Chowning relies on common sense, not partisanship or ideology, to guide her decisions. The Sun endorses Vonne Chowning. Retired businessman Stan Dreyfuss, the Democratic candidate, brings a wealth of experience to newly created District 29. Dreyfuss strongly supports increased education funding. The Sun endorses Stan Dreyfuss.

Impressive for his leadership skills and knowledge of the issues, Democrat William Horne is an outstanding candidate for District 34. A graduate of Western High School and the Boyd School of Law, Horne is determined to make Nevada more competitive with other states in education and other services. The Sun endorses William Horne. In District 37, Democrat Marcus Conklin brings several years of community involvement and a wealth of business experience to his candidacy. We were impressed with his commitment to senior citizens and issues such as education, health care and mental health services. The Sun endorses Marcus Conklin.

In District 41, Democrat David Parks is far and away the best choice. He has served his district well for three terms and is now the assistant majority leader. He is a consumer advocate and taxation expert. The Sun endorses David Parks. Harry Mortenson, a Democrat, has been a fine District 42 representative for three terms. He has earned another term. The Sun endorses Harry Mortenson.
