Election 2002: State Supreme Court
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:08 a.m.
Only one of the two races for state Supreme Court justice is contested.
In Seat B Chief Supreme Court Justice Bill Maupin is facing former District Judge Don Chairez.
Maupin, 55, joined the Supreme Court in 1997 after serving as a District Court judge from 1993 until 1997. He said he wants to reduce the Supreme Court's case backlog and continue the fair and speedy resolution of cases.
Chairez, 47, is a lawyer and legal analyst for Channel 13. A District Court judge from 1994 to 1998, he stepped down from the bench to challenge Shelley Berkley as the Republican candidate for the 1st Congressional District.
Chairez, who lost the campaign, said he has proved that he is willing to stand up for people's rights, despite political fallout from his decisions.
Chief District Judge Mark Gibbons, 51, is running unopposed for Seat D. The 27-year Nevada resident has been a District Court judge since 1997 and said he wants to expedite appeals and make it easier to dispense with frivolous claims or defenses.
