Election 2002: Assembly District 42

Democratic incumbent Harry Mortenson collected seven of every 10 votes to sweep to a primary victory and now faces a Republican who says he stopped running, but has not formally withdrawn.

Republican George "Yiorgo" Aretos told the Sun before the primary he had withdrawn. However, he had not done so in time to have his name removed from the ballot. Mortenson said he has continued to campaign because both names are on the ballot for the seat that represents a part of the southwest Las Vegas Valley.

Mortenson, 71, president of a nuclear and radiological consulting firm, has served six years in the Assembly. He was chairman of the Spring Valley Town Advisory Board for four years.

Mortenson opposes "regressive taxes" and will continue the fight against Yucca Mountain.
