Election 2002: Assembly District 3

Three candidates are vying to replace Democrat John Lee, who gave up his seat to run for state controller.

The southwest Las Vegas district's race features Democrat Peggy Pierce, 48, a Culinary Union community liaison; Republican Joe Wheeler, 43, editor and publisher of The Construction Zone; and Independent American Harold Sims.

Pierce, a member of the Air Quality Hearing Board and the Air Quality Forum, wants to stabilize Nevada's revenue sources, broaden the tax base and improve schools.

Wheeler said he wants to resolve problems with the tax structure and the insurance crises affecting construction liability, medical malpractice and workers' compensation. He has worked 16 years in the insurance industry as an agent and a manager.

Sims did not respond to the Sun's requests for information.

The district has more than 18,000 registered voters, nearly 8,300 Democrats and more than 6,600 Republicans.
