Election 2002: Assembly District 17
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 12:09 p.m.
Clark County management analyst Kelvin Atkinson defeated 14-term Democratic Assemblyman Bob Price in the primary and now faces Republican Luis Valera for the northwestern Clark County district seat.
Atkinson, 33, is a neighborhood liaison to County Commission District G. Valera, 28, is a financial planner.
Atkinson has worked in county government for 10 years, more than six in human resources as a labor-relations analyst, which he says has trained him for state government.
Atkinson favors improving education, managing growth, providing prescription drugs for seniors and keeping doctors from leaving Nevada because of high medical malpractice insurance costs.
Valera lists jobs, growth and education as his top concerns. He supports more parental involvement in the classroom.
Valera has lived in Southern Nevada for 10 years, and has served as the chairman of the Hispanic Outreach Coalition, and is a member of the Latin Chamber of Commerce and president of the Nevada Republican Hispanic Assembly.
There are nearly 15,800 registered voters in the district. Among them are more than 7,300 Democrats and nearly 5,600 Republicans.
