Election 2002: Assembly District 15
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:14 a.m.
Incumbent Democrat Kathy McClain is expected to face a tough challenge from former Lt. Gov. Lonnie Hammargren for the southeast Las Vegas Valley district.
McClain, 58, is program manager for Clark County's Senior Advocate Program. She served as vice chairwoman of Health and Human Services and was a delegate to the 2000 Democratic National Convention. She also is a member of the HELP of Southern Nevada board and other civic groups.
McClain says she will remain an advocate for working families, senior citizens, women, veterans and children. Her platform includes more health care services for seniors, increased funding for public schools to at least the national per-pupil average and promoting neighborhood preservation.
Hammargren, a neurosurgeon, was lieutenant governor under Gov. Bob Miller. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1998, losing to Kenny Guinn in the GOP primary.
Hammargren is also former chairman of the Clark County Republican Party.
Hammargren would like to see reforms in health care delivery and liability law. He also wants stability brought to utility bills.
There are about 18,900 registered voters in the district, including about 9,400 Democrats and more than 6,200 Republicans.
