Election 2002: Assembly District 11

Democrat Bob McCleary, who earned a narrow 11-vote primary victory over six-term incumbent Doug Bache, now must face Republican David Adams.

McCleary, 41, a Toyota dealership parts manager, campaign on child-protection issues for the seat that represents the east side of North Las Vegas.

He describes himself as a community leader and activist, and is focused on paying teachers a better wage and providing teachers resources they need to educate children.

McCleary, whose father abandoned him as an infant, also has promised to target deadbeat parents by pushing for stronger laws to extradite and prosecute those who evade the responsibility.

Adams, 25, an automotive technician, says he will seek federal funding for protection of Nevadans against any problems caused by a nuclear repository at Yucca Mountain, but he also sees benefits of such a project.

His platform also includes improving education and expanding highways linking California to Nevada to make travel quicker and safer.

There are more than 7,800 registered voters in the district. Among them are nearly 4,700 Democrats and more than 1,800 Republicans.
