Election 2002: 2nd Congressional District
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 10:43 a.m.
Incumbent Republican Jim Gibbons goes against Democrat Travis Souza, Libertarian Brendan Trainor, Independent American Janine Hansen, and Natural Law candidate Robert Winquist.
A three-term congressman, Gibbons, 57, said he wants lower taxes and supports more defense spending and pension reforms. A former combat pilot and veteran of the Vietnam and Gulf wars, he is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Armed Services Committee.
Souza, 30, is an instructional designer whose campaign focuses on education and the environment. He supports developing alternative energy sources and strong corporate accountability rules.
Trainor, 54, is an airline customer service supervisor. He wants the United States to be neutral in international affairs and wants the federal government out of Nevada. Trainor also wants to end the federal war on drugs.
Hansen, 50, is a foundation chairman, who is anti-abortion and supports abolishing the Internal Revenue Service.
Winquist, 56, is owner of a vending supply company. He said he supports making Yucca Mountain a nuclear waste dump.
