Columnist Barb Henderson: SNORE not asleep on outdoors conservation

Barb Henderson is an outdoors enthusiast, freelance writer and producer/host of outdoors radio television programming. Her column appears Friday in the Sun.

In writing this week's column, I found myself reflecting on a good friend who died in spring.

For the sportsmen/women who knew him, Charlie Crunden will always be remembered for his dedication and devotion to outdoor and wildlife conservation organizations.

Crunden, who once wrote a weekly outdoors column for the Sun, was instrumental in members of Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts (SNORE) becoming involved with small game water guzzlers.

Former SNORE president Don Dayton said the organization is also involved with annual clean-up along BLM's Bitter Springs Back Country Byway and adopt-a-highway programs for the Nevada Department of Transportation.

NDOW along with members of Wildlife Habitat Improvement of Nevada, Southern Nevada Chapter of Trout Unlimited and SNORE recently hauled approximately 2,000 gallons of water to 13 water guzzlers for wildlife in the Nelson Hills and Searchlight areas.

A Nevada Wildlife Water Development Atlas can be purchased at the NDOW office for $30. It lists big/small game water developments in four sections: western region, eastern region, southern region and guzzler information tables.

Of the approximate 1,100 small game guzzlers statewide about 300 are located in the south. NDOW would like to construct 20-30 small game guzzlers each year.

If needed, I bet the green flag will wave and SNORE will put its efforts into high gear as it offers another opportunity to help wildlife while enjoying the many roads and trails.

For information, contact the Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts hotline at 452-4522.
